International Worker's Day
The story that began in 1884 in Chicago. Or is it even older?
International Worker’s Day is celebrated worldwide on the 1st May. The date was not chosen randomly – this date was meant to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago in 1884. History – wise, this is one of the most important holidays, as it commemorates the new world order. Before Haymarket affair, the workday was much more than 8 hours, usually ten or even twelve hours a day. Despite its tragic roots, the sacrifices of peaceful protestants have not been forgotten. This exact date was chosen by Socialist and Communists of Second International Committee specifically to make this event a part of their own history, to show the rights and power of people. it is a very powerful and valuable moment for russian history.
The history of this holiday begins from the ancient times – the closest relative to this holiday was in ancient world – May Day. The earliest May Day celebration were Floralia and Walpurgis night. May Day was a traditional summer holiday in many European pagan cultures. While February 1 was the first day of spring, May 1 was the first day of summer; hence, the summer solstice on June 25 (now June 21) was midsummer. Then it was later turned into this commemoration of the haymakers. Now, this celebration is more social than religious, so most of the traditions have been lost or abandoned. But it doesn't mean that there are no reasons to visit Russia in this time of year!
In most of the countries Labor Day is an official holiday. People sing, dance and cook in preparation for May holidays. Some companies make a special celebration for their workers. This holiday is especially prominent in Russia and America. In Russia – because this is former USSR, so people feel a real connection to these values even to this day. And, naturally, it is popular in America, as this whole story happened in Chicago. People who are not interested in history wait for this holiday anyway because of free warm days out of work. A great opportunity to spend time with your family and discuss your activities of May Holidays. Time has transformed the entire meaning of this holiday, but it is a great spring event and we, Russians, extremely happy to have this warm spring days off.
